Saguenay, Quebec was formed in 2002 by merging the cities of Chicoutimi, Jonquiere, La Baie and Laterrière. The Saguenay Fjord is 146 miles long in Parc National du Fjord du Saguenay and is rugged with dense forests. We had to travel up the fjord to reach the town of Saguenay.
The town is closely associated with the extensive hydroelectric development on the Saguenay river that provides power for a huge aluminium smelting plant in Jonquiere district, and produces a third of all aluminium manufactured in Canada.
On arriving in the port, we walked around the river and ambled down a few streets to look at the architecture. Saguenay was an unscheduled stop. Very quiet isolated town. Lovely friendly people, the majority being bilingual.
Not a lot to do other than go hiking!
