Such a joy to catch up with Judith and Bob after so long. Judith and I were at school together in Hatfield, Hertfordshire since the age of 11. Judith and Bob moved to Rio Vista a year ago from Virginia, so a long way from home, and have now settled in to Rio Vista, known far and wide as the “Heart of the Delta”. This is due to Rio Vista’s proximity to the confluence of California’s two mightiest rivers, the Sacramento and San Joaquin, and the 1000 miles of the Delta’s pristine rivers, marshes, and wetlands has made it popular for boaters, fisherman, wildlife enthusiasts, bird watchers, wind-surfers, and people seeking a slower pace and a tranquil lifestyle. It’s about mid-way between Sacramento and San Francisco” .
Judith and I visited the Western Railway Museum, in Solano County, California which is located on Highway 12 between Rio Vista and Suisun. The museum is built along the former mainline of the Sacramento Northern Railway. Their collection focuses on trolleys, as it is primarily a museum of interurban transit equipment. Our 50-minute interurban train ride took us down the old Sacramento Northern Railroad, an electric line that once ran between San Francisco, Sacramento & Chico. The 11-mile round trip rolls through the Solano County countryside, with its pristine, unchanged farmland and its views of Mount Diablo and the surrounding Marshlands. The operating fleet consists of trains dating anywhere from 80 to 110 years old. There was a tram there from Melbourne , Australia! Can you believe it!
It was so amazing to see the adverts that were displayed on the old trams. How life has changed!!!
Now home with a glass of champers!!
