Today’s trek is 11.5 kms and relatively easy walking. The walk begins in thick native forest through the Howden Reserve area named after the Scottish family of the same name who built Furneaux lodge in 1906. ( Where we stayed last night). Within 20 minutes we came to a swing-bridge on the track and only 2 of us at a time could cross the bridge. From the head of Endeavour Inlet the track is wide and we pass through flat farmland with lovely views down the Inlet. The track follows the curve of the coastline with the water never far away. We walk on to Big Bay, which is a wide sweeping bay with a shallow tidal area at its head and here the vegetation changes to more lush coastal forest with some beautiful tracts of beech forest. Punga ferns are prolific in the damp gullies.
And then to Punga Cove, our accommodation for this evening.
It’s time to say farewell to Sam, Holly and baby Lachy as they depart for Picton and then on to home tomorrow. It was a pleasure to meet such a lovely couple and their beautiful baby boy and to see them introducing him to this magnificent wilderness.
And to finish the day we sat outside in the spa and relaxed our weary bones!!!
