Farewells galore as we disembarked from the ship. Such a lovely 12 days, and now to leave my sea feet behind!! You have to be mindful of the taxis by the cruise ship, as there were a whole lot of black cars (they obviously knew passengers were departing the cruises ship) waiting to take us to Penn station for $60 when the normal fare is only $20! We took a yellow cab and the driver Jonah was very helpful. The black car driver was most unhappy!!
After leaving our luggage at Penn Station, Susie and I took off to the High Line, sadly without Linley as she was straight off to the airport to get her flight back to New Zealand.
Built on a historic, elevated rail line, the High Line was always intended to be more than a park. You can walk through gardens, view art, experience a performance, savour delicious food, or connect with friends and neighbours while enjoying a unique perspective of New York City. Owned by the City of New York, the High Line is a public park programmed, maintained, and operated by Friends of the High Line. It is 1.45 miles long and takes about 30 minutes to walk.
We started our walk at 34th Street at Hudson Yards. We were at the hippest emerging neighbourhood of Manhattan, full of stores, luxury skyscrapers and trendy restaurants. After finishing the High Line, we walked back to the Broadway area.
Once at Times Square we located Macy’s and decided some retail therapy was required!. I couldn’t resist taking a picture of one of the displays of shoes in the shoe department. And of course it wouldn’t be New York without Bing Bong, the Exotic Smoke Shop!!!
Now back to Penn Station to take my New York to Chicago overnight train! By the way, Penn station is a really old historic building, with a food court, pharmacy and many other facilities. Quite an experience and a beautiful building.
