What a stunning area. Just on the drive nearing the Lake Tahoe area, I could see the beautiful Swiss chalet type houses nestled around the lake, with all the small cruiser boats on moorings afloat the still blue water of the lake.
Lake Tahoe is a large freshwater lake in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, straddling the border of California and Nevada. It’s known for its beaches and ski resorts. About two-thirds of the lake is in California, with about one-third extending into Nevada at the north and south ends of the lake, and the entire eastern shore. Lake Tahoe is the third deepest lake in North America and the 10th deepest in the world. Tahoe’s deepest point is 1,645 feet near Crystal Bay. The average depth of Lake Tahoe is 989 feet.
Tahoe City is located on the shore of Lake Tahoe, at the outlet of the Truckee River. It is full of life, especially at the moment as it is a holiday week here and everybody heads up here for a break. Why wouldn’t you when you are surrounded by such beauty!! I can imagine that it would be magical in the winter as well.
When in Tahoe, it’s necessary to play golf at the Old Brockway Golf Course, which is reported to be in the top ten most beautiful golf courses in North America. How can it not be when you look down the fairway to beautiful snow capped mountains in the background. I accompanied my golf enthusiast friends to play nine holes on this stunning golf course. Despite my less than average game it was a beautiful walk around the course. Tom and Sue played really well as usual and were able to pass on some very good instruction and information on golfing to me. Thank you Tom for organising your mothers golf clubs for me! It was an honour to play with these special golf clubs.
A drive around Lake Tahoe to Emerald Bay followed our golf game. The Bay is stunning with aqua green water. In 1969, Emerald Bay was designated a National Natural Landmark for its brilliant panorama of mountain-building processes and glacier carved granite. The natural beauty, geology and history of this unique island make it one of the highlights of any visit to the Lake Tahoe area. The Park features include Eagle Falls.
Many of the houses in the forest just blend in to the landscape as they are built of timber and are very rustic. They just become a part of the scenery and permit a very casual holiday atmosphere. In the evening we headed down to “Jakes on the Lake” which is on the lake front in Tahoe city. The food is really good fare, very generous portions and the deserts amazing. The three of us shared this massive desert called “Hula Pie”. Can you imagine that even I had problems finishing this extravaganza!!
To work the dinner off we strolled down by the marina and around the edge of the lake and then through Tahoe City. Again so lucky to have visited this magical place.
