Pete, Chris and I decided it would be nice to spend a night on Dartmoor so we headed to Yelverton, a typical quaint devonshire village on Dartmoor. Pete had planned for us to do the Sheeps Tor and Maever Loop walk which partly involved a walk around Burritor Reservoir.
Yelverton is a quaint village nestled in the heart of Dartmoor National Park. With its charming stone cottages, rolling hills, and lush greenery, Yelverton is an ideal place to start our walk.
One of the village’s most prominent landmarks is the historic church of St. Paul’s, dating back to the 13th century. Its striking architecture and tranquil surroundings make it a popular spot for visitors seeking a moment of reflection. We escaped into this church from the rain!! There was plenty of reflection going on there!!!
Onwards to Meavy which is a small village in Devon. It lies a mile or so east of Yelverton. The River Meavy runs near the village. In 2010, Meavy was one of the filming locations for the Steven Spielberg film War Horse.
We had lunch at the lovely old pub The Royal Oak Inn, Meavy, which dates to the late 15th century, and is owned by the civil parish of Burrator with the profits being used by the parish council to fund projects within the parish. Some of the seating consists of pews formerly located in the nearby church.
After a lovely lunch we walked around the reservoir and then climbed Sheeps Tor, which was a challenge. This stupendous tor, situated high above the village of the same name, is a well-known landmark near Burrator Reservoir, and is renowned for its rock climbing and bouldering and its stunning views across south-west Dartmoor. The summit is 369m above sea level and it is one of the area’s most prominent tors.
To end the day we are heading to Tavistock for the night, where we have a little cottage booked for the night!!!
