Hi I’m now in Germany (Bavaria) where I am about to embark on a 7 day hike with my fellow hiker, Geoff, also from Australia and a very experienced hiker over the years. We flew into a very wet Munich and managed to navigate our way on to the train to take us to Bernau am Chiemsee. When we arrived there it was pouring with rain and there were no taxis or Ubers operating due to floods in the area. Luckily for us, the lady in the news agency got her friend to pick us up and take us to our hotel which was 2 kms away! Otherwise who knows what we would have done!!
Fortunately the next day the rain had stopped and we had an amazing day walking up into the mountains. For all our sins we decided to opt for the longer walk which was 20.2 kms. This ended up being 25kms as Geoff and I had been working from different maps and had to retrace our steps!! Geoff got us back on track pretty quickly.
The forest part of the walk was beautiful. Very fresh and unspoilt. The higher we got the more amazing the views became. The photos don’t really do the views justice. I was expecting Julie Andrews to come running over the hills singing……
We walked past waterfalls and through pine forests, and took an alternate route via the Grassauer Almen which allowed us spectacular views of the Chiemgau panorama.
We came across a beautiful cafe in the middle of the countryside and sat down to coffee and apple cake. I wasn’t sure if I would be able to get up again!!
When we arrived at our hotel (Hotel Wessner Hof) the restaurant was closed and there was nowhere to eat in this tiny village, so after a shower, and feeling like I’d never be able to walk again, Geoff and I headed in to the village of Grassau (actually the mother of the lady running the hotel gave us a lift) and had a good pub meal. You can see me here looking very happy with my Hugo!!! We still had to walk back to our hotel but we made it! Early night tonight in preparation for tomorrow!! Great day and a wonderful sense of achievement.
