What an unexpected exhibition of all sorts at the Sculptureum just outside the small town of Matakana. The private collection includes over 800 works of art by local and international artists. A stroll through the three art-filled gardens and six galleries gave us a look at works from some of the world’s best glass artists, figurative works by Cezanne, Monet, Chagall, Rodin, animal sculptures, and contemporary works in plastic and other materials We came across live rabbits to the grand Chihuly glass chandelier and many things in between.
The Sculptureum, (Sculpture and Museum) is the brainchild of Auckland-based lawyers Anthony and Sandra Grant, and took 12 years of development and design before it opened to the public. The Sculptureum 14 acre award-winning vineyard overlooks the sculpture gardens. We stayed for lunch at Rothko Restaurant which was amazing, and enjoyed a glass of the Sculptureum wine.
In the gardens at the Sculptureum there were plaques of famous quotes, in this instance most were from Steve Jobs, but there were others as well. All very true!!
And on the way home we stopped by Christine and Richard’s daughter, Sarah and her husband Matt, to have a cuppa and to go and visit her 4 children, (her horses)!!
Friends for 56 years!!! Time to leave so I can return in the future! Now returning to Brisbane to spend some time with my 3 Queenslander grandchildren!
